"An Old Hawaii Night"

AOHN ArtworkCelebrate Old Hawaii and support Family Support Hawaii on Saturday, November 6, 2010 at Waikoloa Marriott.  Family Support Hawaii (formerly Family Support Services of West Hawaii) provides services islandwide to help families and children. Stroll with a complimentary glass of premium wine (or soda, if you prefer) or no host cocktails, chat with friends,  and delight in the amazing silent auction focusing on Hawaiiana, bringing many items home to the islands!  Dinner begins with Caesar salad, followed by your pre-ordered choice of  rib eye steak with hamakua mushrooms and merlot demi glaze, or blackened salmon with a smoked pineapple sake vinaigrette, or grilled portobello mushroom and vegetable stack with spicy tomato couli.   Premium wines accompany dinner.    Dessert?  White and dark chocolate mousse in a raspberry chocolate cup with a chocolate drizzle.

About Breastfeeding

breastfeedingWest Hawaii Early Head Start (WHEHS) and its parent agency Family Support Services of West Hawaii (FSSWH) requested and obtained supplemental funding from a local foundation to initiate the Big Island Breastfeeding Support Project in the spring of 2008. The aim of this project is to expand and evaluate the evidence-based practices used within West Hawaii Early Head Start to promote and support extended exclusive breastfeeding in a manner that builds upon cultural strengths and acknowledges traditional practices.

A Celebration of Fatherhood 2010

Fatherhood Celebration - June 2010

Fun, fun and more fun was the order of the day at the 6th Annual Celebration of Fatherhood, held on Saturday June 12th at the Swing Zone in Kona. Fathers and their families were treated to this free event sponsored by Family Support Hawaii’s, Na Makuakane Maikai O Hawaii fatherhood program. Almost 200 participants enjoyed the event, an increase of 100% over last year. Activities included use of the batting cages, mini-golf, Tsunami water Slide, Slip-N-Slide, and a dunking-booth. (The line to get dunked was as long if not longer than the line to throw the ball at the target.) A gourmet chili and rice lunch was included as well as hotdogs and shaved-ice.

Rainbow Connection basketsThe Baby Baskets Are Back!

If you gave birth to a child at either the Kona Community Hospital or the North Hawaii Community Hospital a few years ago, chances are that you received a newborn baby basket to welcome your baby into the community, and to provide you information on the variety of resources available for new families. Unfortunately, due to cuts in both the State and the County, the particular program that provided for the delivery of the baskets was suspended, leaving some parents unsure of what community resources were available to them if they had a need.

FSSWH Selected As "Reading Is Fundamental's" National Program of the Month

WASHINGTON, June 3, 2010—Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), the nation's oldest and largest children and families' literacy nonprofit organization, named Family Support Services of West Hawaii (FSSWH) as the Program of the Month for June.

Located in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, FSSWH spreads awareness about the lifelong consequences of child abuse and neglect. Founded in 1979, the organization's mission is to support families and communities in providing love and care for area children. FSSWH has several programs dedicated to supporting early childhood education and development for 3,500 Hawaii Island individuals and families each year.
